When I first started building my art business 4 years ago, I heard people say - just keeping doing the work, good or bad, just stay with it. At the time it felt daunting but now my life.
Creativity, a creative life can be all sorts of things. I often hear people say that they are not creative, which feels like a very limiting belief to me. Creativity can be cultivated and developed when given attention and intention. I grew up in a home that was full of my mother's art projects. Afternoons after school, she was either in her studio or in the kitchen working on something delicious for dinner. I saw her create beautiful folk art pieces and amazingly elaborate dinner party menus. She was profoundly influences first by Julia Child and then Martha Stewart, but she did everything with her own flair.
For many years, I thought I would never be as creative as my mother. Her way of doing things was the norm, but my own creative life had to evolve and it did just that. Creativity in cooking has always be at the core of how I approach food preparation. Those who know me, know how much I love setting a table and creating a warm and inviting experience. I spend a lot of time creating food using simple, fresh ingredients. This season, my husband and I have been growing a range of exciting things in the garden. Radishes, lettuce, small eggplants, three types of beans, potatoes, garlic, red currants and loads of beautiful flowers for cutting and herbs for seasoning. It all connects, food, garden, art - it all comes from a desire to connect with people and nature.
This is the foundation of my new tea towel collection. A small collection of three tea towel designs that celebrate good friends and lovely food! Hope you have your own way of cultivating a creative life. It doesn't have to be just one way or include just one creative form - you can incorporate creativity in most everything!
